épancher

to pour, pour out; to erupt, spit out, spurt out

Usage

Mostly reflexive and slightly literary: s'épancher means to open up emotionally, pouring out one's feelings to someone (s'épancher auprès d'un ami) — a step more formal/literary than se confier.

Examples
  • Elle s'épanche souvent auprès de sa meilleure amie. — She often opens up to her best friend.
  • Il avait besoin de s'épancher après cette rude journée. — He needed to unburden himself after that hard day.
  • Le poète s'épanche sur la perte de son amour. — The poet pours out his feelings over the loss of his love.
Common mistake

Don't confuse with the unrelated épandre (to spread manure/fertilizer) — the two look similar on the page but épancher is about pouring out emotions, épandre is a literal agricultural term.

Often confused with épandre.
