abader

to allow out; to remove the restraints from; to escape, get out, run away, figuratively take off

Usage

A regional verb, mostly used reflexively (s'abader), meaning to break free and run wild — from the old rural expression "à la bade," "at liberty." Still current in Savoyard and Lyonnais French for animals (or people) bolting loose, but essentially unknown in standard/Parisian French.

Examples
  • Les moutons se sont abadés dans le pré voisin. The sheep broke loose and ran wild into the neighboring field.
  • Les enfants s'abadent dès qu'on ouvre le portail. The children run wild the moment the gate opens.
  • Ne laisse pas le chien s'abader, il ne reviendra pas.Don't let the dog run loose, it won't come back.
Common mistake

This is a dialect word, not standard French — a learner won't need it outside a Savoie/Lyonnais context, and using it in standard conversation will just draw blank looks rather than sound wrong per se.
