Usage

A technical carpentry/plumbing term meaning to join two pieces (planks, pipes, rails) end to end, as opposed to overlapping them. Rare outside trade contexts.

Examples

Le menuisier a abouté deux planches pour former le plateau. — The carpenter joined two boards end to end to make the tabletop.
Ces rails sont aboutés tous les dix mètres. — These rails are joined end to end every ten meters.
On aboute les tuyaux avant de les souder. — The pipes are joined end to end before welding.

Common mistake

Learners can confuse abouter (join end-to-end) with the far more common aboutir (to succeed/end up) — the words share a root but mean entirely different things.
