adouber

to dub (bestow the title of knight upon); to name (a minister, successor etc.)

Usage

Adouber originally meant to knight someone in a medieval ceremony, but today it's used almost entirely in its figurative political/social sense: to publicly endorse or anoint someone as a legitimate successor or candidate (adouber un candidat). In chess, saying "j'adoube" lets a player adjust a piece without being forced to move it.

Examples
  • Le président sortant a adoubé son successeur. The outgoing president anointed his successor.
  • Ce jeune chanteur a été adoubé par la critique. This young singer has been endorsed by the critics.
  • "J'adoube", dit-il avant de replacer son fou."I adjust," he said before repositioning his bishop.
Common mistake

Learners take adouber literally as "to knight," but in modern usage — politics, media, sports — it almost always means "to publicly legitimize or endorse," a figurative extension far more common today than the historical ceremony.

Often confused with introniser.
