Usage

Allonger covers making something physically or temporally longer (allonger une jupe, une réunion) and, in the reflexive s'allonger, to lie down. It's also common informally for diluting a sauce or drink with water or stock.

Examples

Il faut allonger cette robe de deux centimètres. — This dress needs to be lengthened by two centimeters.
Je vais m'allonger un peu avant le dîner. — I'm going to lie down for a bit before dinner.
La réunion s'est allongée bien plus que prévu. — The meeting ran much longer than planned.

Common mistake

Learners confuse s'allonger (to lie down, adopt a horizontal position) with se coucher (to go to bed for the night) — s'allonger just means lying flat, for a nap, a rest, or a medical exam, not necessarily going to sleep.
