Verb conjugation

choir

to fall

Usage

A literary, archaic verb meaning to fall, now grammatically defective (it lacks most of its conjugated forms) and largely replaced by tomber in everyday speech. It survives almost entirely in the fixed expression laisser choir (to drop/abandon someone or something).

Examples
  • Le vieux mot choir ne s'emploie presque plus qu'à l'infinitif. The old word choir is barely used except in the infinitive.
  • Il a fini par la laisser choir après des mois d'hésitation. He ended up dropping her after months of hesitation.
  • Les feuilles semblaient choir doucement dans le poème.The leaves seemed to fall gently in the poem.
Common mistake

Don't try to conjugate choir the way you would a regular verb — as a defective verb it's missing most tenses and persons, and outside of laisser choir and a handful of literary forms, tomber is what real speech actually uses.

In real life
  • expression "Laisser choir"A long-established French idiom meaning to drop or abandon someone, employed by classic 17th-century writers like Molière and La Fontaine even though purists of the era considered it vulgar — it's now the main surviving use of the otherwise archaic verb choir.
