Confronter means to confront or bring face to face — comparing two things or testimonies (confronter des témoignages) or, very commonly in the construction être confronté à, facing a difficulty or problem (elle est confrontée à de nombreux défis).
Être confronté à means 'to be faced with' (a problem, a difficulty), not necessarily a direct physical or verbal confrontation with a person — learners sometimes assume it always implies conflict, when it's often just neutral exposure to a difficult situation.
