consister

to consist (of/in); to entail, to involve

Usage

Consister always pairs with à or en — consister à faire quelque chose (to consist of/in doing something) or consister en quelque chose (to consist of something material) — describing what something fundamentally amounts to.

Examples
  • Le travail consiste à répondre aux clients. The job consists of responding to customers.
  • Le repas consistait en un simple sandwich. The meal consisted of a simple sandwich.
  • En quoi consiste votre projet ?What does your project consist of?
Common mistake

Consister needs à before an infinitive and en before a noun — mixing these up (*consister de, *consister en faire) is one of the most common preposition errors learners make with this verb.

Often confused with constituer.
