déchaîner

To unleash something powerful and hard to control — a storm, violence, passions, a crowd's enthusiasm (déchaîner les passions, la tempête se déchaîne) — almost always used about forces or emotions rather than physical objects. The reflexive se déchaîner describes a person or crowd going wild or flying into a rage.

• Le concert a déchaîné l'enthousiasme du public. — The concert unleashed the crowd's enthusiasm.
• La tempête s'est déchaînée sur la côte toute la nuit. — The storm raged along the coast all night.
• Il s'est déchaîné contre ses adversaires pendant le débat. — He went on the attack against his opponents during the debate.

Since the 1990 spelling reform, déchaîner and déchainer (without the circumflex) are both correct — don't mark the unaccented form wrong. Don't confuse it with enchaîner, its near-opposite (to chain up, to link together), despite the shared root chaîne.
