Usage

To found or establish (fonder une entreprise, fonder une famille) and, figuratively, to base something on grounds (fonder ses espoirs sur). Often used reflexively: se fonder sur means to rely on.

Examples

Ils veulent fonder une famille. — They want to start a family.

Common mistake

English speakers say fonder sur for 'based on' correctly but forget the passive: use être fondé sur or se fonder sur, not a literal 'be founded in'. Do not confuse with fondre, to melt.
