franchir

to clear, to cross (a line), to pass (an obstacle etc.); to get over (a fence); to cover (a distance)

Usage

To cross or clear an obstacle: a border, a threshold, a river, a barrier (franchir la frontière, franchir le seuil). It also works figuratively for milestones (franchir un cap). Regular -ir verb like finir.

Examples
  • Ils ont franchi la frontière à pied. — They crossed the border on foot.
  • Le coureur franchit la ligne d'arrivée. — The runner crosses the finish line.
  • L'entreprise a franchi le cap du million de clients. — The company passed the one-million-customer mark.
Common mistake

Franchir is transitive and takes a direct object: say franchir la frontière, not franchir à la frontière. For simply travelling across a place, traverser is the everyday choice.

Often confused with traverser.

In real life
  • expression Franchir le Rubicon — An idiom for taking a bold, irreversible decision. It comes from Julius Caesar crossing the Rubicon river with a legion in 49 BC, defying Roman law and triggering civil war.
