"To see," both literally (voir un film) and for understanding ("je vois," "I see" / "I get it"). The near-future revoir ("à bientôt" companion au revoir) comes from this verb too — literally "to see again."

• Je vois la mer d'ici. — I can see the sea from here.
• On se voit demain ? — Shall we see each other tomorrow?
• Je ne vois pas le problème. — I don't see the problem.

Confusing voir (to see, perceive) with regarder (to watch/look at deliberately) — "I watched a movie" is j'ai regardé un film, not *j'ai vu un film* (though the latter isn't wrong, it emphasizes having seen it rather than the act of watching).

Often confused with regarder.

• expression Déjà vu — "Already seen" — déjà (already) plus vu, the past participle of voir — borrowed into English in 1903 for the sensation of having lived through a moment before.
• expression Voir Naples et mourir — "See Naples and die" — an 18th-century expression (from the Italian "Vedi Napoli e poi muori") for something so beautiful that nothing after it could compare.
