to become night, to get dark; to be somewhere by dark
An impersonal weather-type verb, like amanecer, describing nightfall — anochece temprano en invierno (it gets dark early in winter). It can also describe a person or thing being somewhere at nightfall (anochecimos en el pueblo, we were still out and about when night fell on us in the town).
Giving the impersonal weather sense a personal subject — 'anochece' (it gets dark) works like llueve, with no subject; only the secondary 'to be somewhere at nightfall' sense takes a personal subject.
Often confused with amanecer.
