anotar

To write down or note something (anotar un número, anotar apuntes en clase), and in sports, to score (anotar un gol, anotar veinte puntos). One of the most common everyday verbs for jotting things down and, in Latin American Spanish especially, the default word for scoring in a game.

• Anota mi número por si necesitas ayuda. — Write down my number in case you need help.
• El delantero anotó dos goles en el segundo tiempo. — The forward scored two goals in the second half.
• Voy a anotar todos los gastos del viaje. — I'm going to note down all the expenses from the trip.

Not realizing anotar is the standard word for 'to score' in Latin American sports commentary — Spain tends to say marcar for goals, while much of Latin America says anotar, especially in basketball and baseball.

Often confused with apuntar.
