To land, literally for aircraft (el avión aterrizó a tiempo) and figuratively for coming back down to earth after being distracted, overly ambitious, or lost in thought: aterrizar en la realidad. The figurative sense is extremely common in everyday advice-giving.
Using aterrizar for a plane taking off — that's despegar; aterrizar only covers the landing, the opposite end of the flight.
Often confused with despegar.
