To utter a single word or sound in response, almost always used negatively in the fixed expression sin chistar — to do something without protest, without a word of complaint: obedeció sin chistar. Rarely used outside that expression.

• Aceptó el cambio de planes sin chistar. — She accepted the change of plans without complaint.
• Hizo todo lo que le pidieron sin chistar. — He did everything they asked without a peep.

Trying to use chistar outside the sin chistar construction — on its own, in modern speech, it's rare; the fixed negative phrase is essentially the only common context.
