A rare, mostly archaic variant of chistar — to make a soft hissing or clicking sound to get someone's attention or ask for silence. Almost never used today outside old texts or very traditional speech; chistar itself (as in sin chistar) is the form that survives.
Using chistear in everyday speech — modern Spanish overwhelmingly prefers chistar, almost always inside the fixed phrase sin chistar; chistear reads as archaic or regional.
Often confused with chistar.
