cuerear

To work on any part of the process of tanning leather (including the killing, skinning and transporting of it).; to flay; to whip (with a leather belt)

Usage

A regional verb (mainly Argentina, Uruguay, Chile) with two senses: literally, to skin an animal (from cuero, hide/leather), and colloquially, to harshly criticize or tear into someone verbally — cuerear a alguien, to trash-talk them.

Examples
  • El gaucho cuereó la res tras la faena. — The gaucho skinned the animal after the slaughter.
  • Lo cuerearon en redes sociales por ese comentario. — They tore into him on social media over that comment.
  • No hace falta cuerear a nadie para dar tu opinión. — You don't need to trash-talk someone to give your opinion.
Common mistake

The figurative "harsh criticism" sense is regional slang (Southern Cone Spanish) — outside that region, criticar duramente is the phrase that will actually be understood.

Often confused with criticar.
