To pronounce two vowels as a single-syllable diphthong, or (of a vowel) to become one: a vowel like the e in pensar diphthongizes to ie in piensa. A technical linguistics verb; the stem-changing pattern in verbs like querer or poder is the most common place learners meet the idea.
