étancher

to make watertight, to stop water from flowing; to quench (thirst)

Usage

To quench thirst (étancher sa soif) — by far the most common use — and, less often, to stop a flow: staunch bleeding (étancher une hémorragie) or stop a leak.

Examples
  • Il a bu un grand verre d'eau pour étancher sa soif. — He drank a big glass of water to quench his thirst.
  • L'infirmier a réussi à étancher le saignement. — The nurse managed to staunch the bleeding.
  • Rien ne semblait étancher sa curiosité pour ce sujet. — Nothing seemed to quench his curiosity about the subject.
Common mistake

Learners overextend étancher to any kind of drinking — it specifically means to satisfy/quench thirst or stop a flow, not simply "to drink"; boire un verre doesn't need étancher unless thirst is the point.
