To reach or attain a goal, place, age, or level (atteindre son objectif, atteindre 18 ans), and also to affect or hit someone emotionally or physically (la critique l'a atteint, cette maladie atteint surtout les enfants). Both the 'achieve/reach' and 'affect/hurt' senses are common.
Atteindre can mean either 'to reach/achieve' or 'to hurt/affect' depending on context — a learner who only knows the 'reach a goal' sense will misread 'il a été atteint par la nouvelle' (he was hit hard by the news) as something about achievement.
