Contondre is a rare, essentially obsolete verb meaning to strike or bruise (from Latin contundere). Modern French almost never uses it directly — instead you'll meet its derived adjective contondant (blunt, as in a blunt weapon, une arme contondante) and its more modern replacement verb contusionner.
A learner will encounter the adjective contondant (une arme contondante, a blunt weapon, common in crime reporting) far more often than the verb contondre itself, which modern usage has largely replaced with contusionner.
Often confused with contusionner.
