débotter

to remove the boots of

Usage

Débotter literally means to pull someone's boots off, but it survives today almost exclusively in the fixed expression à peine débotté or au débotté — right off the bat, without any preparation, as soon as one arrives.

Examples
  • Le ministre a répondu aux questions au débotté.The minister answered the questions off the cuff.
  • Ils sont arrivés et, à peine débottés, ont dû repartir. They arrived and, before they'd even settled in, had to leave again.
  • On l'a interrogé au débotté, sans le prévenir. He was questioned on the spot, without warning.
Common mistake

The plain literal verb (to pull off boots) is essentially obsolete on its own — what a learner actually needs is the fixed expression au débotté / à peine débotté, not the verb used freely elsewhere.
