Usage

To tenderize meat physically (attendrir un steak) and, just as often, to move someone emotionally, to soften their heart (ce film m'a attendri). Both senses — literal and emotional softening — are common.

Examples

Common mistake

Attendrir someone means to move them emotionally or soften their heart, not to make them literally tender or soft-bodied — don't take the meat-tenderizing sense too literally when it's used about a person.
